A 12-year-old boy was hit by a car Friday morning while riding his bike near Standard Middle School.

California Highway Patrol officials said the student at Standard Middle School was hit near the intersection of Ferguson and North Chester Avenues.

CHP officer Curtis Rhoades said after the crash, the driver got out of the car and helped the boy to the sidewalk. The driver then left the scene.

Rhoades said the boy was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Vaughn Cain, with CHP, wants to remind people driving in school zones to slow down and be aware of their surroundings.

"We all know that school is in session until June, and if you are going to be traveling in the morning around these school zones, it's safe to assume they are going to be active school zones," he said.

Cain said that the school zone speed limit is 25 miles per hour.

He also said his advice for students is to stay off the roads as much as they can.

Highway Patrol officials are still looking for the suspect from the crash. They describe the suspect's vehicle as a dark blue/gray KIA.
