The Boston University Community Service Center, established in 1986, organizes 13 service programs throughout the academic year within the Greater Boston area. Each program works to break down stigmas, and social constructs surrounding some of the world's most complicated social justice topics, ranging from human rights to public health. If you are interested in volunteering with the BU CSC, come visit us on the 4th floor of the George Sherman Union.

What BU Community Service Center Program Are You?

FOOD

Afterschool is one of the CSC’s longest running programs, and was originally called the Youth Tutoring Program. Afterschool offers Boston University students the opportunity to provide homework help, tutoring, SAT/College-Prep, and creative activities to youth ages K-12 in the Greater Boston Area through a variety of public schools and community centers. The program allows volunteers to serve as mentors as they work to understand the multifaceted issues faced by youth in Boston.

Buckle up and look both ways... or ELSE! Comm ave, which is full of bikers, hoverboarders, and those glued to their phones, is also the stomping grounds for CSC's volunteer vans. Transporting volunteers to and from our community partners, Steve is in charge of making sure our volunteers are as safe and efficient as possible on Greater Boston's roads.

One Time Events are for volunteers with rigid schedules and who cannot commit to our weekly programs. Events are scheduled on a one-time or monthly basis, focusing on areas that the Community Service Center does not offer yearlong programs. Student groups, Greek life, residence life, and other organizations are also encouraged to email the Events Program Manager in order to find existing service opportunities for members in the surrounding Boston area.

The Development Program Manager coordinates fundraisers, alumni relations and outreach to other interested contributors, and supports existing programs. The position gives the student valuable experience in non-profit fundraising and development. Development occasionally accepts volunteers for Oxfam fundraisers, alumni events and database management.

The Community Engagement Program Manager connects with local and national organizations to expand and promote opportunities for volunteers, interns, and new professionals. What is Wizards? Wizards was created in 1994 as a program to get students more excited and involved in science. Wizards volunteers perform a range of experiments to enhance students’ STEM education and engage them with science. Volunteers perform these science experiments with greater Boston area students of various ages on a weekly basis.

Voices focuses on volunteering with LGBTQ+ centered programs around the greater Boston area. Specifically, Voices strives to support individuals of all identities.

BEEP BEEP! Student Food Rescue, or SFR, is one of the largest student-run food salvage programs in the country. Volunteers pick up donated food from local farmers markets, bakeries, restaurants, and grocery stores and drop it off at over 20 recipient sites around the Greater Boston Area. SFR also organizes other one-time opportunities and events throughout the year, including Hunger Awareness Week in the fall. Whether you are a returning SFR volunteer or a new volunteer who’s just interested in trying out a food run, you are guaranteed to have a fun time meeting new BU volunteers, exploring Boston, and giving back when you sign up for one of our 24 food runs this year!

Through Siblings we strive to empower youth in and around Boston by pairing Big Siblings (volunteers) with Little Siblings. Through these pairings we build a sense of community and friendship through mentorship. Siblings meet regularly and attend program-wide events hosted by the Community Service Center.In the past, Siblings has worked with Winship Elementary School, Jackson Mann, St. Patrick and Edison K-8 elementary schools.

Project Hope provides education and volunteer opportunities within public heath issues. Topics include childhood obesity, self-identity, and HIV/AIDS awareness, prevention, and care. In the past, Project Hope has worked with Cambridge Cares about AIDS, Community Servings, SPARK, and AIDS Action Committee.

Making Music brings performing-arts education to our young people in the Boston Public Schools.Volunteers offer one-hour instrumental or vocal lessons to youth once a week. The program culminates in an end-of-the-year recital on BU’s campus where students can showcase their new talents.In the past, Making Music has worked with Josiah Quincy Elementary School, Thomas A. Edison Elementary School, Winship Elementary School, JP Manning Elementary School, and the after-school YMCA program at Winthrop Elementary School.

Joining Hands serves as a link between students and elders and people with varying abilities in a variety of settings. By forming friendships with people of varying abilities and ages, volunteers close the gap between our differences and gain awareness about the issues facing these unique populations.

The Empowerment League was founded in 1998 as the Volunteers for Citizenship, with a focus on literacy and ESOL classes. Since its founding, the program has also been known as the Multicultural Advancement Partnership Program (MAPP). Today, Empowerment League strives to address human rights issues while establishing beneficial partnerships in Boston. Volunteers are placed at sites such as Women’s Lunch Place, the International Institute of Boston, Massachusetts State Prisons, Blackstone Elementary School and CELOP.

Branch Out connects students with opportunities to learn about and be stewards of Boston’s urban ecosystem. Volunteers will engage in service for the people, plants, animals, and public spaces of Boston while building community on campus and in the city. In the past, Branch Out has worked with COASTSWEEP, Boston Nature Center, The Esplanade Association, Save that Stuff, and Bikes not Bombs. Service projects include beach cleanups, tree planting, invasive species removal, clam monitoring, and more.

Alternative Service Breaks (ASB) promotes community service, develops leadership skills, and creates strong bonds among its participants. Since its founding in 1988, volunteers have the opportunity to take part in an alternative to the traditional spring break. In 2015, students traveled to 40 sites throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. Students spend a wonderful week addressing issues such as environmental protection, children, affordable housing, hunger, education, public health awareness, and abilities.

Wizards volunteers perform a range of experiments to enhance students’ STEM education and engage them with science. Volunteers perform these science experiments with greater Boston area students of various ages on a weekly basis. Volunteers are split into groups led by a peer leader. The peer leader is responsible for communicating with their group members and making sure all goes well at site. The experiment coordinators ensure that supplies are ready for each site and plan our experiments. The program manager provides a lesson plan, but volunteers are encouraged to add their own knowledge and experience to their plans.

Student Studio brings art education to local schools and community centers by offering an outlet for creative minds and cultural expression. Including art helps create a broader educational experience for young people.

The First-Year Student Outreach Project welcomes first-year and transfer students to Boston University and the Greater Boston area before the fall semester begins. FYSOP engages first-year volunteers and upperclassmen staff leaders through social justice education, service, and reflection. Our service works to address community-identified needs through eleven intersecting focus areas.
