The 9 Best New Lipsticks of 2016

Blame it on Kylie Jenner and the trend shift that has made perfectly plump, mattified lips the thing to have, but we’ve noticed a major focus on new lipstick releases. It seems like affordable drugstore brands and luxury purveyors alike are launching new formulas every day—and if you, like us, have a borderline alarming propensity for lip color hoarding, there are very few things as titillating as the possibility of finding a Holy Grail in a new, yet-to-blow-up lipstick. (Or liquid lipstick—unsurprisingly, they’re everywhere right now.)

We’ve got our eye on these 9 new releases, some of which haven’t even hit the market yet. Get excited.

laura-mercier-velour-lovers-lip-colour

Laura Mercier Velour Lovers Lip Colour ($28)
The latest Laura Mercier release comes in a range of 20 intensely pigmented matte shades. Unlike all too many other matte formulas, it goes on smooth and creamy and doesn’t bleed, feather, or smudge, and the waxy, oil-rich texture is surprisingly moisturizing.

tarte-tarteist-lip-paint

Tarte Tarteist Lip Paint ($20)
Whether it’s a pastel lavender or a so-dark-it’s-almost-black burgundy you’re after, this vegan-friendly liquid lipstick offers impressively full coverage and a non-drying matte finish in a single swipe. There’s an accompanying lip liner for every shade too, if you’re really going for the full-on Kylie look.

nyx-full-throttle-lipstick

NYX Full Throttle Lipstick ($7)
As the name suggests, this lipstick is intense: The colors are super-saturated, the formula is waterproof, and the beveled-edge bullet was designed to enable you to line your lips in addition to filling with color.

smashbox-be-legendary-matte-lipstick

Smashbox Be Legendary Matte Lipstick ($21)
Smashbox hit it out of the park with this collection of bold, lightweight lipsticks—the nudes are no less eye-catching than the bold red and berry shades. It’s specially formulated to stay true to color in photographs, so you don’t have to worry about your pinks turning fuchsia when subjected to a camera flash.

maybelline-vivid-matte-liquid

Maybelline ColorSensational Vivid Matte Liquid ($6.39)
This liquid lipstick is a solid choice for anyone who wants to dip a toe in the trend without going full speed ahead—despite its matte finish, it has medium (and surprisingly moisturizing) coverage, so you can layer for opacity or just impart a little bit of color.

revlon-ultra-hd-matte-lipcolor

Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor ($7.19)
Revlon is killing it with their “gel” formulas, which have a weightless feel you won’t even notice you’re wearing. These matte liquids never feel sticky on lips, and the eight rich, velvety shades offer something for everyone.

mac-retro-matte-liquid-lipcolour

MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour ($20)
The latest innovation from the beloved brand is described as a liquid lipstick (we’re sensing a major trend here, no?) with a “liquid-suede” finish that turns into a comfortable, satiny matte on lips. In true MAC forms, each color option is deeply, delightfully pigmented, from pale creamy pink and coral to the richest plum and wine shades.

butter-london-plush-rush-lipstick

Butter London Plush Rush Lipstick ($22)
Butter London is known mainly for its nail lacquers, but if you’ve yet to try any of their makeup, you’re in for a treat. This brand new formulation imparts smoothing, lip shape-enhancing color that leaves lips looking lush and full.

chanel-rouge-coco-stylo

Chanel Rouge Coco Stylo ($37)
A new Chanel lipstick release is a rare thing indeed, but with a formula as good as this one, we don’t mind the wait. This color/balm/gloss hybrid, out soon, isn’t just creamy and lightweight going on, but it actually moisturizes and smooths lips, too—fine lines and dry patches don’t stand a chance.
