Amarillo SWAT confirms suspect of active shooting situation at Walmart is dead

Amarillo police confirmed around 12:20 that they shot and killed a male suspect who fired shots and took a hostage inside the Walmart on Georgia Street and I-27.


Around 11 a.m., APD, SWAT, DPS, FBI and other agencies responded to an active shooter situation at the Walmart and evacuated everyone inside. Several daycares in the area were placed on lockdown as the situation unfolded.

Police said there was at least one hostage taken but it has now been confirmed that there were two hostages and both were employees. The hostages was confirmed to be uninjured following the death of the suspect.

According to police, the situation was a workplace-type incident between an employee and a boss.

As of 2 p.m., APD is still urging people to avoid the area as the investigation into this incident continues.

Witnesses stated that the shooter was an employee that took another employee hostage.

A command center was set up in the parking lot of Midnight Rodeo at 45th Avenue and Georgia Street.

Walmart released a statement nearly three hours after the situation ended.
