Teddy Johnson and Pearl Carr were a husband-and-wife singing duo who enjoyed success with Sing, Little Birdie, a perky number with which they came second in the 1959 Eurovision Song Contest. At the time they were the highest-placed British entry on record.

Johnson had been a professional entertainer for 20 years when the opportunity arose. “I had never heard of Eurovision to be honest,” he told the contest’s website. After preliminary rounds in Shepherd’s Bush, he and Carr were chosen to represent the UK with the Birdie song and flew to Cannes.
