We Will Rise Above, Together

As we look for inspiration to get us through this latest wave of the pandemic – and as we recognize this Martin Luther King Jr. Day – I recently came across an article in which a gentlemen reflected on his experience hearing the late great Reverend Dr. King speak to an audience in Stamford, Connecticut, just a few years before his passing.

At the time of the event, Dr. King was running late because storms delayed the landing of his flight. It had been a bumpy ride, and the pilot had to circle for quite some time before he could safely land. As Dr. King was famous for, he turned his personal experience into a poignant, universal lesson. He asked the audience to consider how “problems” – like thunderstorms mid-flight – can inspire the best in us, but it’s all about how we respond to these challenges.

What came from this story was a key message on overcoming adversity: A kite rises against the wind – not with it.

This is quite a striking image for me because it reminds me of all of our Atrium Health teammates.

I think we can all agree that the smoother flight we hoped for in 2022 has, once again, run into strong winds and dark clouds. I know it can feel like we’re flying around in circles unable to land the plane. But our teammates have continued to rise to meet the storms brought by COVID – like that kite – leaning in and not getting carried away. Their commitment has lifted all of us, individually, and together, higher than we ever imagined we could go.

And while our teammates have shown the world your extraordinary physical endurance, it’s the strength of their spirit which has become our beacon of light as the storm rages on. They have brought reassurance when there was unrest, unity when there was division and hope when there was despair.

So, as we begin yet another year, let’s all try to keep that spirit strong until the winds cease, the clouds clear and the storm subsides.

Whatever the weather we face in flight, we will rise above, together.
