For as long as we can remember, American shoemaker Converse has supplied everyone from athletes, movie stars, the everyday teenager and our favorite rappers with a comfortable, all-purpose sneaker. Nearly 100 years after the first Converse was introduced, we all still got love for a pair of Chuck Taylors. Now, Converse is suing 31 companies for trademark infringement upon its classic shoe.

Converse says its unmistakable design of black stripes and a rubber toe upper is being used by copycats such as Walmart, Skechers, and Kmart among many others. Although Converse is suing for monetary damages, its main goal is to get the knockoffs off the shelves, explains Converse Chief Executive Jim Calhoun:

“The goal really is to stop this action. I think we’re quite fortunate here to be in the possession of what we consider to be an American idol.”

Let’s be real, knockoffs from companies such as Fila and Bob’s are clearly meant to resemble Chucks. No question that Converse has been an American staple for generations, but will they be able to get rid of the fakes? We’ll be keeping an eye on how this plays out.
