Interval workouts are scientifically  proven to help you lose fat. Alternating high-intensity exercise with short rests sends your body into calorie-burning overdrive, both during and after your workout.

But Men’s Health Fitness Director BJ Gaddour, C.S.C.S., has an even better idea: Instead of resting between sprints, just dial back your intensity.

The technique is called “continuous interval training,” and you’ll pack more work into less time—frying even more calories.

(Gaddour uses the science of metabolic conditioning in his latest fat-loss workout program for Men’s Health, THE 21-DAY METASHRED.)

This continuous interval workout pairs burpees with bear crawls, both of which challenge your core.

“The two movements are competitive in the sense that you’re working similar muscle groups, but it’s a high- and low-intensity option,” Gaddour says.

Alternate 20 seconds of burpees with 20 seconds of bear crawls for 3 minutes.

“That might be enough,” Gaddour says.

Think you can handle more? Rest 1 minute between rounds. Aim for 3 to 5 total rounds.
