As guys, we're not only looking to constantly improve our bodies, but our minds as well. Our social skills. Our charm. The ability to be a Man™ in this, the year of our lord 2018.

As of today, the first rule to all that is never do 99% of the things Sean Penn did in this Late Show with Stephen Colbert interview.

The Oscar winner smoked two cigarettes inside the Ed Sullivan Theater to discuss his new novel with Stephen Colbert — explaining the habit by pointing out the book is named Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff, and not, for the record, Bob Honey Who Just Don't Do Stuff. (The "darkly funny" novel, which is out this month, tells the story of Bob Honey, "a modern American man, entrepreneur, and part-time assassin.")

Penn said he took sleep meds before the interview, telling Colbert: “I’m doing well. You’ve inherited a little of the Ambien I had to take to get to sleep after a red-eye last night." (For the record, you should definitely read up on the risks behind sleeping pills.)

In the end, Colbert himself seemed to take a lecturing tone.

“Please don’t smoke anymore,” the host says in the clip. “I don’t mind. My parents smoked when I was a child, so it gives me happy memories to smell cigarette smoke, but you know we want you to be around for a long time and those things are bad for you.” (He's right. Even one cig a day carries major health risks.)

Guys, please don't be like Sean Penn. Right up there with the guy who takes selfies in the gym is the man with a cigarette who can't read the room. We get it. We all saw Mad Men. But nobody said that was cool, and second hand smoke is a killer for cardiovascular health, lung function, body mass index.

So, to recap: Be less like Sean Penn. Be a little more like Stephen Colbert (and try Ruth Bader Ginsburg's workout while you're at it).

Here are 5 steps to quit cigarettes, just to get you started.
