Ebron, Metcalf, and Copeland Plan for Amazing with John Hancock

Achieving the future you want starts with a vision. If you didn’t have to work today, where would you go? If you had more free time, what would you do? These activities can all become a reality in retirement—and starting to plan now can help you get closer to reaching those destinations and goals in the future. Now that you have that vision in mind, the next step is making it happen. At John Hancock Retirement, we encourage our participants to not only plan for retirement, but to plan for amazing.

Three people who understand the importance of planning for their futures now are professional athletes Eric Ebron, D.K. Metcalf and Brandon Copeland. They’ve started exploring their respective long-term goals and passions outside of football and have shared their stories with us through our partnership with The Players’ Tribune and CBS Sports Digital.

Eric Ebron sees a future as a firefighter when he retires from his career as a tight end for the Indianapolis Colts: “When I’m done with football, I want to be able to view life differently. The fact that you just don’t know when football is at its end, you don’t know when it’s time to hang it up,” he says. “Having a backup plan is very smart. My grandfather was a hero, my dad was a hero, and I feel like a great way to be a hero to my kids is to help secure their future.” By planning for amazing, Eric Ebron can continue to provide for his kids, who have been the driving force behind everything he does in life.

D.K. Metcalf, wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks, also has a passion outside of football: his love of food. In fact, if football hadn’t worked out, he was planning to go to culinary school in Chicago. His father was a professional football player too, which D.K. says has helped him be intentional with his financial decisions: “When I got here, I had a plan financially that I was going to save as much money as I could to cause generational wealth,” he says. When he retires from football, D.K. plans to pursue his passion and open his own restaurant.

When New York Jets outside linebacker Brandon Copeland is not on the field, you can find him flipping houses or teaching financial literacy to students. Brandon discusses how his work in real estate and education became two new ways to provide for his family outside of football. Watch his full story here.

At John Hancock, we know that retirement is personal – but there is a universal element for our participants: Everyone should feel confident in a plan designed just for them that outlines the best way to pursue financial security, given their situation. This is why an individualized and customized approach to giving and receiving advice is key to delivering the best outcomes for our participants.

Based on the concept that no two plans – and no two plan participants – are exactly alike, we consult with businesses and use data-driven best practices to ensure plans are easy for the businesses to manage, personal to the participant, and deliver proven results. As advocates of holistic financial wellness, we use advanced analytics to further personalize our participant outreach. We want to help individuals manage their finances today for a financially confident tomorrow, and create customized plans based on personal goals.

Ultimately, we are all in this together to help make retirement plans work, and we rely on collaboration between advisors, plan sponsors, and providers to achieve the outcome collectively envisioned: to deliver financial advice in meaningful ways to have the deepest impact.

In that spirit, we encourage you to think today about your future “tomorrows”— and to plan for YOUR version of amazing.
