Home again after a cold night out at the Vinnies CEO Sleepout SA I love my home. I’m lucky to have it back after fleeing from a spouse who trapped me for many years using coercive control. After I escaped, he switched to brutal physical violence and subjected me to 3 years of post-separation abuse, engaging the very systems that should have been there to protect me. I fell through the gaps, endured unstable housing and periods of homelessness, but through privilege and luck, I scrambled my way back up. I became a warrior while fighting that invisible war in my own home, and now I’m a “veteran”. Domestic abuse is a leading cause of homelessness for Australian women. Last year I completed a Graduate Certifcate in Domestic Violence Responses, to expand my knowledge of the mechanisms of abuse, and the barriers to help-seeking that different groups in our community face. This understanding feeds into my own small company’s Venus Franework project - modelling and simulation of complex sociological systems, to analyse and address inequity. The idea started during my PhD studies in numerical modelling of seismic waves, as I sidetracked into thinking about the spread of toxic culture. My idea built up over years of modelling complex systems in defence industry, when I thought about how combat engagement scenarios reflected my life of dodging “bullets” and things that blew up in my face as I pursued my goals. But that’s all head-in-the-clouds, academic mumbo jumbo for busy brains. The reality is, people in our community are experiencing homelessness and need assistance right now! Today! We're excited to connect on this platform and share some updates about the Scherman Foundation’s future. 🔍 Reflecting on Our Journey In 2021, we celebrated the Foundation’s 80th anniversary. This was an opportunity to reflect on our history, core values, and most importantly, the transformative work of our grantees. It was not only a moment to explore our past but also to define our future. During this period, we also focused on developing a shared understanding of racial equity and anti-racist practices among our board and staff. We came away with a renewed, deepened commitment to racial justice, and we're now focused on applying that framework to our grantmaking with transparency and accountability to our community. 🚀 A Vision for the Future We've spent the past year reimagining our mission, vision, and program guidelines to better reflect our two core commitments: advancing racial justice and emphasizing the importance of organizing, power shifting, and movement building in BIPOC communities. We are challenging traditional philanthropic structures and striving to be better partners, advocates, and allies to our grantees. During this ongoing process, we’ve assessed our current grantmaking and explored our collective vision for the future grounded in economic, political, and cultural transformation. We've provided final grants to some current grantees that don’t fully align with our direction while increasing support for those that do. We've also temporarily suspended our rolling acceptance of Letters of Inquiry until our revised program guidelines are available to ensure transparency during this period of change. 🌱 What’s Next? 1️⃣ Inviting feedback from our grantees and community members this summer to ensure our vision aligns with those at the frontlines of the movements we support. 2️⃣ Revising our guidelines and grantmaking strategies to reflect our new framework. 3️⃣ Launching these updates on our website and social platforms this fall. DID YOU KNOW? Recent data show that Catholics who leave the faith overwhelmingly make this decision during their college years. Now more than ever, we need our resources to invest in this age group during this critical time in their faith journey. People of faith play a pivotal role in the very fabric of society. Numerous studies point to the correlation between faith and the well-being of individuals, families, and communities. From metrics of happiness to lower rates of divorce, longer life, health, and economic growth, the practice of faith has shown to improve outcomes across the board.   Faith-based and faith-inspired organizations and people deliver almost half of the vital human services throughout our country and abroad. People of faith give more than three times as much as their non-religious counterparts. Consequently, as the number of people with religious affiliation decreases as the data suggest, we will see a significant decline in people serving in these vital organizations, as well as the philanthropy to these and other secular organizations. We have a math problem: fewer people of faith = less philanthropic giving + fewer people on mission to serve others. At JPII Newman, we are actively forming men and women for lives of boldness and leadership. Students who study in Omaha tend to stay in Nebraska. They are the next leaders in our parishes, communities, and business and nonprofits. The impact will be multi-generational! Come get to know us!

5 steps to deduct breast cancer early: - Conduct monthly breast self-exams to check for any changes or abnormalities. - Schedule annual clinical breast exams with a healthcare provider for professional assessment. - Follow recommended mammogram screenings based on your age and risk factors, typically starting at age 40. - Understand your individual risk factors, including family history and genetic mutations, to tailor your screening plan. - Promptly report any unusual breast changes to your healthcare provider for evaluation.
