On April 2, 2024, BU School of Social Work (BUSSW) hosted the much-anticipated Hubie Jones Lecture on Urban Health. This year’s lecture featured a presentation from Lee Pelton, president and CEO of The Boston Foundation, and a conversation led by Prof. Darien Williams from BUSSW. Dean Barbara Jones was joined by Hubie Jones and his wife Katherine, along with dozens of in-person attendees and 150+ Zoom guests.
Pelton discussed the phenomenon of a person’s zip code being the number one determinant of their health, as well as the pivotal role leaders in education can play in promoting urban health and well-being. During the Q&A session, Hubie Jones also spoke on the importance of perseverance and community when tackling urban health disparities, and the unique opportunities available in Boston to advocate collectively compared to other cities. Dean Jones closed the event by announcing the newly established Dean Emeritus Hubie Jones Scholarship Fund established by BU Trustee and Prof. Emerita Cassandra Clay (SSW’79), which provides scholarships to BUSSW macro practice students.
