Five Terrier traditions we’re in love with

Posted February 2020

February is the month of friendship, love and romance. And in honor of that, we’re highlighting the Terrier traditions we’re head over heels for.

The Marsh Plaza Seal

Our numero uno is, quite obviously, “stepping on the BU seal” as it marks the moment you become a BU alum. Commencement is filled with many mixed emotions, but stepping on the seal is always a happy occasion. It’s the time to say “I did it!” and start taking advantage of the alumni perks we offer. We’re talking about networking opportunities, alumni mentors, free career webinars, discounts, travel programs, and so much more.

Knight’s Quest

Whether you became a knight or simply dreamed about the idea, this tradition is definitely one of the best. Established in 1988, a Terrier must drink 50 different types of beer at Fuller’s BU Pub (previously known as the BU Pub.) The rules are pretty simple: it must be at the Pub, you can only drink two beers a day, and it cannot be completed in less than 12 weeks. According to the Dinning Services’ website, alums can still partake in the Quest. But as a young alum, you can also attend our annual Re-u-knighted event during Alumni Weekend.

The BU Rock

The BU Rock, also known as the Greek Rock, is regularly spray painted by fraternities and sororities. Legend has it that the rock is covered in more than 1,000 layers of paint. Although alumni don’t partake in it after graduation, one can always visit the Rock on their way to the Dahod Family Alumni Center. The Center, located in the renovated and restored building formerly known as the BU Castle, is alumni’s home on campus.

Mondays

We have two very prominent Mondays: Marathon Monday and Beanpot Monday. Both are epic in their own ways. Even after college, the Beanpot is a time to gather with friends and rally for the Terriers. The men’s and women’s hockey team have made it to round two. Hurray! We’re hosting watching parties across the United States for the men’s hockey championship on February 10—join us!

T Anthony’s

We just had to get this one in here. The local pizza restaurant, located on West Campus, is filled with pictures of our Terriers. It’s also home to one of the best late night bites on Commonwealth Ave. The spirit of this spot isn’t in the greasy pizza or hot mozzarella sticks, but in all the Terriers that have gathered there. If you’re ever feeling nostalgic and want to hang with fellow alums, join us for a happy hour or a networking event in your area. (P.S. we have many free events that include complimentary appetizers!)

Bonus: The Rhett Bench

Rituals have to start somewhere. The #RhettBench was installed in August 2019 to foster school spirit and create a new tradition. Donated by the BU Alumni Council, the Bench sits between the BU Beach and the Alan and Sherry Leventhal Admissions Center. Rhett is patiently waiting for you to sit next to him and snap a picture.
