It’s understandable that you’d want to do what you can to avoid running into a rattlesnake. (This Texas family, which found one in their toilet, wasn't so lucky.) But animal handler and YouTuber Nick “the Wrangler” Bishop recently went looking for rattlesnakes—and had close encounter that would have made pretty much anyone else freak out.

Bishop posted a video online that showed him resting in a forest as an Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake slithered up beside him. “I’m literally sitting face-to-face with the wild and highly venomous Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake,” he told the camera. “And I am afraid to move…I don’t even want to move my arms.” It’s completely understandable, given that the snake was staring him down the whole time.

Bishop admitted in the video that he didn’t know what to do, so blew on the snake and then he touched his tail to try to get him to move. The snake did—right onto Bishop’s lap, while still staring at him. “Oh my god,” Bishop can be heard saying in the background, followed by “F—.” (He has a reason to be afraid. “I do not want to move right now,” he said. “I am shaking.” He finally picked up a stick and gently poked the snake’s tail to get it to move. Finally, the snake moved behind Bishop, and he immediately jumped up and sprinted away as the snake started rattling its tail.

“This was a very close call,” Bishop wrote in the caption of his YouTube video. “I was definitely out of my comfort zone but by God’s grace I wasn't harmed.” He also pointed out that this proves that rattlesnakes won’t bite unless they’re provoked, but you probably want to avoid a rattlesnake in your lap situation in the future, just to be safe.
