The Hollywood star Michael Douglas has issued a pre-emptive denial that he performed a sex act in front of an employee at his production company after being made aware that an allegation was being investigated by reporters.

Douglas, 73, suggested that his accuser was using the momentum of the #MeToo movement, which encourages women to speak out against harassment, for personal gain.

“I pride myself of being so supportive of the women’s movement,” Douglas told the online magazine Deadline. “My mother was an actress, and I myself married an actress and have been supportive of this movement wholeheartedly, through all my years.”

He added: “I support the #MeToo movement with all my heart.”
