Picture this: You're getting ready for a date, and reach into your closet to pull out what Beyoncé would call a "freakum dress," only to discover that this dress is less sexy and more...completely covered in wrinkles.

Thankfully, there is a solution to your wrinkly-clothes struggles that doesn't involve accidentally giving yourself a second-degree burn with that crappy iron you've had since college.

“Clothes steamers are easier and more convenient—there’s no need to drag out an ironing board and you can steam while clothes are on a hanger,” says Melissa Brooks, director of marketing at Conair Corporation. “Plus, you can use a steamer on items you can’t iron, including sequins, beading, delicates, and upholstery.”

Before you start steaming, always check the garment care label for warnings and suggested settings. “This is important as some embellishments on garments and certain fibers are very sensitive to heat and/or moisture,” says Mary Johnson, P&G fabric care principal scientist. Some fabrics like cotton can deal with super-high temps, while others (like polyester) need cooler settings, she says. And only steam clothing that you're sure is stain-free, since using heat on an existing stain can permanently set it.
