Things got seriously uncomfortable on American Idol last night. This season has certainly seen its share of awkward moments, but this might be the most cringeworthy one of all.
Ryan Seacrest was caught on live TV making some weird comments to Katy Perry, apparently unaware that they were back on the air after a commercial break.
As the camera pans in, Perry pointedly says "We're on," trying to direct Seacrest's attention to the camera.
"Your mom's pretty," he replies.
Perry says, "My mom? Well, I hope the apple doesn't fall far from the tree," and winks at the camera, perhaps trying to signal to Seacrest that, um, THEY'RE LIVE.
He chuckles and says, "You are too, but you're not a mom."
"Not yet," she said.
And then Seacrest made things seriously weird when he said, "Do you wanna talk about it?"
At this point, Lionel Richie mutters "Don't start."
There's some uncomfortable laughter, and you can see the exact moment when Seacrest gazes around and realizes that they are in fact on live TV. The show went on as planned, but many American Idol fans on Twitter couldn't get over the awkward moment.
This odd encounter comes several months after Seacrest was accused of sexually harassing a hairstylist who worked with him on E! News. He denied the allegations.
