Volunteer Spotlight: Angela Reding

How long have you been volunteering at Scottish Rite for Children?
13 years

What led you to volunteer?
I was raised with the values of giving back, and when I moved back to Texas, I joined the Junior League of Dallas. Based on the opportunities that JLD offered for volunteering, Scottish Rite seemed like the perfect fit. I grew up in Dallas and was always volunteering with organizations that helped the community. I have always loved Scottish Rite’s mission for helping children.

What is the role of the Volunteer Executive Committee?
The role is being the voice that speaks on behalf of the volunteers to help make decisions that will help our volunteers be successful and improve the organization as a whole.

What does a typical volunteer shift normally look like for you? When do you volunteer?
I volunteer on Wednesday nights and at various special events. A typical shift is helping out in the Gift Shop or spending time with the kids.

Do you have a ‘day job’?
I work at GameStop as a Senior Sales Tax Accountant.

Do you have a favorite event at the hospital?
Christmas Tree decorating – seeing the community come together to help Scottish Rite get into the spirit of the holidays.

Do you have a favorite memory from volunteering?
Creative Caper night with the kids and being able to bring a craft for the patients to enjoy. There are so many craft nights that I love, but one of my favorites was when we would do banner week and have the kids help add a touch of art of their own to the banner. I also really enjoy KidSwing. Being able to do an event with my niece and showing her the importance of volunteering and giving back.

What do you enjoy most about Scottish Rite for Children?
Spending time with the kids and getting to watch them smile and laugh.

What are you currently watching on Netflix?
Designated Survivor

Who would you most like to swap places with for a day?
Bill Gates and be able to donate and impact charities of my choice.

What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not volunteering?
Hanging out with my family, friends and my dog.

Why do you think it is important to volunteer?
Volunteering is important as it offers essential help to worthwhile causes, people in need and connects you with others. It also helps build self-confidence and self-esteem. Not only is it you giving back, but you are also getting something out of it.

One thing that would surprise someone to learn about me is....
My dog and I passed the therapy evaluation six months ago and we now are able to volunteer together at nursing homes and hospitals in the area.
