Adults in Britain have some of the worst-quality sleep in the world. Recent studies have found that 38 per cent of people don’t get enough. So what can people do to improve things? What does a sleep expert do to get the perfect night’s sleep?

Dr Neil Stanley has been involved in sleep research for 36 years and is a former director of sleep research at the University of Surrey, where he set up the world’s largest clinical trials sleep laboratory. He consults at sleep centres internationally and advises psychologists and medical staff on their patients’ sleep. Here he reveals what those years of research have taught him.
