While on a promotional tour for his starring role in the Mummy reboot, Tom Cruise has issued promising news for the revival of another franchise. A sequel for Top Gun, his iconic 1986 film, is “definitely” happening, according to Maverick himself. It’s not just a vague, eventually-it’ll-happen promise either. Cruise told an Australian morning show that Top Gun 2 will begin filming “probably in the next year.”

A lot has changed in the last 30 years, but no force has become stronger than Hollywood’s attractions to sequels, reboots, and revivals. Top Gun 2 has been teased seriously since January 2016, when producer Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted a photo of him with cruise and word of sequel talks. And when asked this year in a Reddit AMA if he’d reprise his role as Iceman, Val Kilmer replied with a strong: “Hell yes. What a hoot it will be…”

What remains to be seen is what the plot would entail for the now-old fighter pilots, but does it really matter? Confirmation of a sequel comes first, our blind joy comes second, and finally, the plot itself comes third. Maverick and Iceman could spend the film grounded and complaining about how drones get all the good missions these days and we’d probably still turn out in droves.

That is, as long as we get another “Danger Zone” montage.
