    Rich Barlow is a senior writer at BU Today and Bostonia magazine. Perhaps the only native of Trenton, N.J., who will volunteer his birthplace without police interrogation, he graduated from Dartmouth College, spent 20 years as a small-town newspaper reporter, and is a former Boston Globe religion columnist, book reviewer, and occasional op-ed contributor. Dr. Cottone and hundreds of other legal immigrants have worked hard to becomes citizens of this great constitutional representative republic wherein every member of the government takes an oath of office to uphold and defend the constitution and in turn to defend the rights of all citizens. Because the U.S.A. is not a pure democracy the majority cannot readily force its ideals on the minority. This is not the case in pure democracies or in countries run by real dictators wherein human rights are not constitutionally protected.

    America is the shining beacon on the hill but we cannot house the world so we must all work to help people in other countries duplicate our wonderful system of government by the people for the people so they too can enjoy the fruits of the tree of liberty.
