Investing in Quality of Life in New Center Detroit

DETROIT (Aug. 28, 2014) – Two and a half acres of riparian forest in Rouge Park recently were restored by a local partnership between The Greening of Detroit, The Conservation Fund, and U-Haul International, Inc.

Rouge Park, established in 1920, is one of America’s biggest urban green spaces covering more than 1,100 acres. Historically, this park was a popular destination for families to enjoy time outdoors: camping, swimming and playing golf.  Four miles of the Rouge River make its way through the park, encompassing 48 municipalities and directly affecting more than 1.5 million people.  By planting trees in Rouge Park, The Greening of Detroit, The Conservation Fund, and U-Haul aim to revitalize the quality of life that park visitors, nearby residents and wildlife have come to expect.

Under the expert guidance of The Greening of Detroit and maximizing the hard work of hundreds of community volunteers, this large-scale restoration project resulted in 1,600 trees being planted along Rouge Park’s Outer Drive.

“The primary goal of U-Haul Company of Detroit is to serve the needs of the do-it-yourself moving customer,” said David Ruff, marketing company president of U-Haul Company of Detroit.  “For me and my team, service to our customers also means promoting the initiatives that enhance the community in which we live, work and play.”

U-Haul continues to aid in the restoration of Detroit with its purchase of the historic Nabisco building in New Center. U-Haul opened U-Haul Moving and Storage of New Center in September 2013. This facility is a full-service moving and self-storage location that offers truck, trailer and auto-transport rentals along with boxes and moving supplies.
