Description

This is a most attractive five storied, Grade II listed Tower Mill, which is of special architectural and historic interest. The property is believed to date back to the early 19th century. Generally known as Oare Mill, it is situated half a mile south of the eastern side of the Oare to Faversham route. Nestled amidst its own beautiful grounds, it lies a short distance from the medieval market town of Faversham, with quaint, old character buildings, a range of shopping facilities and a stunning market square. The entrance hall is accessed through a stable style door, and is positioned on the ground floor, where corn once stood. The ground floor also houses a bedroom, utility room, bathroom and separate wc. A flight of stairs then takes you to the meal floor (the first floor), that has been converted to the main kitchen area and sitting room. This leads out onto the charming circular veranda, with stunning views of the lakes, countryside and Swale marshes towards the Faversham Creek. On a clear day, you may even see the steeple to the parish church. To the second floor, a further bedroom and cloakroom have replaced the over driven stones, although the great spur wheel remains in place in all its glory. A staircase then leads up into the study or bedroom with stairs leading to the top floor. The main wooden shaft is still intact and is understood to be one of the largest seen in any Kent windmill. Again, at this level the windows provide some charming views of the Kentish Countryside. The property is so full of character and must be viewed to understand the style of living it provides. Outside, the impressive gardens are again charming and well stocked, providing an ambient and tranquil setting with a variety of mature planting and species. Immediately surrounding the mill is mainly laid to lawn, with a number of millstones. The main gardens are separated by a brick wall with a gate, leading to meandering paths around the ornamental pond, brick edged flower beds and various seating areas. Open tread stairs provide access to the first floor balcony at the rear of the mill. Finally, the property is accessed via a five bar gate from a long drive, providing a lovely aspect as you approach the windmill. In the surrounding area there are various lovely walks, including the popular Saxon Shore, the creek side, the mouth of the Swale and Harty Ferry, with its marshlands and nature reserve. Nearby is Luddenham village with its sought after primary school. The current owners have spent many happy years living here and have compiled much of the history. We have more on file for your interest. Please note, viewing must always be made via Your Move estate agents. EPC exempt.

Historic Notes

Oare Mill was originally built for Mr. Elliott, a miller and corn dealer, and is believed to date from about 1819. It was later sold to Thomas Hope who owned the property up to 1879, after which it came into the possession of the Gun Powder Company. For four years from 1882, the Mill was hired and worked by Herbert Filmer of Preston, who was at that time impressed by what splendid order the Mill was in. A number of years later during the First World War, the Mill was requisitioned by the government. In 1963, it was converted into an attractive home by its late owner, Mrs Phillipa Hall to remain an impressive feature in the local landscape. It is though, believed to be the largest of only four mills in the County to be inhabited.
