Images That Will Bring On Wanderlust
Global Programs annual spring photo contest winners

BU has a serious case of wanderlust.
For its fourth annual photo contest, BU Global Programs invited students, alumni, faculty, and staff to submit images that evoke the ways a global experience can change perspectives. Nearly 600 photographs poured in, taken by BU community members in 62 countries, among them Pakistan, Senegal, Scotland, Algeria, and Guam—all new to this year’s contest.
A panel of 22 judges whittled the entries to 35 semifinalists, and a second round of judging narrowed that to 12 (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place and 9 finalists) based on criteria of global engagement, diversity, and composition.
Willis Wang, vice president and associate provost for global programs, says the contest enables the BU community to share their “research, studying, service, or simply global exploration”—whatever they’re doing worldwide. “We have been impressed by the breadth and depth of the BU community’s global engagement, and with the creativity of the photographers,” he says.
First prize went to Eva Gallagher (CFA’19) for her black-and-white photograph of two nuns walking down a public stairway in an impoverished neighborhood in Croatia’s capital city of Zagreb. Gallagher, who visits the country each summer, says she has been increasingly struck by how religion offers “one of the few sources of hope” for poor people living in Croatia. Her first-place finish garnered her a GoPro camera bundle.
Heying Yu (COM’18) came in second for an image of taxi drivers huddled together in Kolkata, India. The photo was taken around midnight on her first day in the city. Yu’s driver had pulled over to ask a group of other taxi drivers for directions to her hotel when she snapped the photo. Her prize was a camera gear bag.
Third prize was awarded to Madeline Christian (SHA’17) for her dazzling shot of waterfalls taken while she was kayaking in Milford Sound/Piopiotahi, a fiord in the southwest of South Island in New Zealand. She won a travel preparedness kit, packed inside a foldable solar backpack.
The nine finalist images were taken in Cambodia, China, the Dominican Republic, Japan, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zanzibar.
