  1. I wonder if the only reason they selected Tassler was because she’s a Trustee and would therefore require a smaller speaker fee.

Congrats BU!! Underwhelming commencement speakers since 1839.

      1. I second this. With BU’s reputation being the best it’s ever been, we should be able to do better than someone on our own Board of Trustees–and probably did. I wonder who it was supposed to be…

  2. An incredible underwhelming speaker. For a university that demands so much of its students financially, they’re within reason to expect someone slightly better to sign off their 4 years of hard work and investment.

    1. Or go see Steven Spielberg at Harvard, or Matt Damon at MIT, or even Hank Azaria at Tufts. BU definitely has the lackluster speaker in Boston this year, that’s for sure. Very disappointing.

  3. Way to provide us a huge disappointment. Why isn’t Travis our speaker? I would prefer him 100x more than someone I had to Google to know who she was.

  4. Your choice fora commencement speaker is extremely disappointing given the rigorous curriculum and financial commitment required for graduation. You were scooped by Northeastern?

  5. I agree it’s a letdown, but I think the last few years BU has done better in getting noteworthy speakers. At least she’s a alumna, which might be inspiring to some.

2015 – Meredith Vieira (TV Personality)
    2014 – Deval Patrick (Governor)
2013 – Wendy Kopp (Founder, Teach For America)
2012 – Eric E. Schmidt (Former CEO, Google)
    2011 – Katie Couric (Journalist)

As for disappointing commencement speakers, I think my class had it the worst.

    1. Wendy Kopp was awful. The worst part of my son’s four years at BU. Listen to the speech and tell me anyone who was more boring than that. And it was insulting to the educators and education majors in the audience to listen to her self indulgent talk about her ill trained charges being the solution to America’s education problem. I’ll get over it one day. Not yet though.

  6. Tassler may not have the name recognition of some silly actor or TV personality, but if you read above her accomplishments are seriously impressive. By the way, aside from being star-struck momentarily by an actor, do they really have anything much to say to graduates? Doesn’t it seem more sensible to judge Tassler based on what she says?
