One of the questions I’ve gotten from a number of readers is “How do I use those ropes I see at the gym?” Battle ropes are becoming more and more common, which is awesome news seeing as they’re a crazy efficient total-body strength and cardio workout in one.

This is a great starter workout to get you more familiar with this new-ish gym staple. You’ll notice that the work time is short, just 20 seconds. You want to be going as hard and as fast as you possibly can for the full 20 seconds. As you increase your strength and endurance, you can increase that work ratio to 30 or 40 seconds, but the key is to never drop the intensity. Think of it like a sprint: It’s better to give a short, all-out burst of effort than a longer interval at half speed.
