The Internet of Things was a key topic at SAPPHIRE NOW this year! In case you missed it, here is a recap:

Harness the Internet of Things to Lead in a Networked Economy

Steve Lucas, President of SAP Platform solutions talked about harnessing the Internet of Things to create new business opportunities, products and services through machine-to-machine communication, cloud, Big Data, and analytics. The demo shows how predictive maintenance of jet engines helps reduce maintenance costs, avoid operational risk and improve asset uptime.

Build a More Connected World with the Internet of Things

David Parker talked about how SAP is helping companies across various industries move into the connected future by combining sensor and machine data with backend data for real-time and predictive decision-making. Myriam Jahn, Managing Director, IFM Consulting talked about their SAP-ready sensors that are being used by customers to rapidly adopt IoT solutions for their manufacturing-oriented businesses.

Internet of Things in Action – The Networked Economy Showcase at SAPPHIRE NOW

Catch IoT in action with this display of connected retail, logistics and predictive maintenance. These connected vending machines offer highly personalized user experience, promotions, and contact-less payment. However, the real magic happens in the background with real-time re-routing of connected trucks to replenish machines (or stores for that matter) based on real-time demand. Using telematics, the truck operator can remotely monitor location, contents and health of trucks throughout a region. Sensors on the vending machine (and trucks) constantly measure machine health and automatically generate a service ticket to schedule a service appointment before the machine breaks down resulting in lowering maintenance costs and equipment downtime.

Seize Economic Opportunities from the Internet of Everything

Joseph Bradley, founder of the Internet of Everything (IoE) practice at Cisco said IoE is expected to generate $19 trillion in global value over the next 10 years. Joseph talks about the digital renaissance that we are living through today with ubiquity of mobile, Internet and social technology. IoT will transform businesses and cities e.g. by introducing new business models and dynamic pricing and payments for services such as city parking meters.

Joe Weinman, renowned author of Cloudonomics shared insights on the economic impact of the Internet of Things. IoT will transform businesses by redefining and optimizing key objectives of operational excellence, product leadership, customer intimacy, and accelerated innovation. These objectives can be achieved by adopting the Internet of Things powered by big data, analytics, cloud and mobile technologies.

Thrive in the Digital Networks of the Networked Economy

This panel features the best minds in IoT including Michael Chui (McKinsey), Erik Brynjolfsson (MIT), Joseph Bradley (Cisco), Deepak Krishnamurthy (SAP) and hosted by Vivek Bapat (SAP). Panelists discussed how the Internet of Things, with billions of connected things, will result in a fully “Networked Economy” that will transform the way people, societies, businesses and economies perform and interact.
